How does a stress-free Christmas sound? Bloody brilliant, right?
We countdown the days, we prepare and we know what to expect.
But our pup’s don’t.
This can result in your puppy becoming over-excited, anxious or both. They can display behaviours you don’t want, which is going to have a big impact on yours and your family’s day.
As always, my advice is to be proactive, kind, fair, patient and realistic!

1. Start crate / pen training
If your puppy isn’t comfortable yet in their confinement area, start training for this now.
Your puppy may need time in their crate or pen to calm down or when you can’t keep a close eye on them.
It isn’t to be used as a punishment, but as a management tool:
You can also use the confinement area or your puppy’s harness and lead when guests arrive to prevent jumping up.
If your puppy takes themselves off to their crate / pen or into another room ensure they are left alone.
Give them time to have a break, uninterrupted.

2. Plan
Plan time in the day to take your puppy on their usual walk or out into the garden to play, sniff or train.
Spend some time together, doing something they enjoy, away from all the excitement.
It’ll help them to settle indoors.
3. Prepare
Start thinking ahead.
What do you need to buy that’s going to help settle your pup down?
Tasty chews? Kong or toppl fillers?
Have these items ready instead of wishing on the day you had something to hand.

4. Manage
Puppies are curious. They’re going to investigate your tree, decs and presents.
Pups don’t know what they are. Everything is a chew toy.
Use management to keep your puppy, tree and gifts safe.

Don’t leave presents laying around where your puppy can access them. This has happened to me before where my dog opened one of my sons presents from Santa! It was not a good start to the day.
5. Be aware of the dangers
Take care with food and drinks so your puppy doesn’t consume something you don’t want them to.
A recent article by Glasgow Live warns of the potential dangers for our pets over the Christmas period. They say, “vets experience the most emergency visits due to cases of fatal poisoning” and it’s not just chocolate we should be concerned about.
